Havanese are funny little clowns, whose mischievous nature, in combination with their intelligence and agility can produce lots of entertaining mischief and games.
In the house they are mostly quiet and calm. However as the day progress their energy rises which usually result in short burst of highly entertaining and ludicrous games around the house. Sometimes they just get up and start running around the furniture – probably chasing imaginary ball, or start racing from one room to another like a rabbit, or even start jumping on any available flat surface as little frogs. These energy bursts are always entertaining and rare are persons that don’t start laughing at their antics. It is fulfilling watching them play with so much enthusiasm and joy while making adorable growling sounds of happiness. After they use up their energy they would lie exhausted on the first available surface and sleep with smiles on their faces. The end of games is always as abrupt as their beginning.
Havanese are quick leaners, sometimes even to quick. They will learn what a treat is in less than a week, but to learn command words will require a little more time. They are very intelligent but also devious. If you are not careful they will learn to manipulate you and you will be wrapped around their little finger. „Puppy dog face“ is their signature move and they use it whenever they can to get out of trouble. When they get in trouble they will put the most adorable expression on and start sucking up until you calm down and smile. The other technique for getting out of trouble is to play dumb and pretend to sleep until you cool off.
Forget about spending piles of money on some „new“ and „modern“ toys because their favorite toys will always be toilet paper and plastic bottle (which do not necessary need to be empty). The toilet paper actually wants to be cut up in to small confetti’s and distributed all over the house and who are they to deny it. The plastic bottles mock them with those defiant corks and they have to twist them off which can sometimes last to couple hours. However when lacking their favorites they will start a quest around the house to find something other to entertain them. They will go wherever it’s needed to find the new favorite: beneath the couch or armchair, behind the cabinets or wardrobe, in your purse etc. This can and will provide hours of entertainment to this small energetic dogs.
